— Mastering Fire and Wind to Behold Heaven —
“Breath is the handwriting of the Divine.” — Meihua Xin-Yi
Throughout the ages, sages perceived in each breath the pulse of the cosmos itself.
Breathing was never mere inhalation and exhalation—it was the spiritual current linking Heaven and Earth.
This guide reconstructs the traditional Kriya-style spinal breathing through the lens of Meihua Xin-Yi, the Chinese system of symbolic hexagrams, to create a safe and potent method for awakening inner light.
It resonates with Kundalini and classical Kriya Yoga yet removes the dangers of hyperventilation or energy overload, providing a balanced path of illumination.

This article explores breathing and consciousness from a spiritual-philosophical perspective.

Practice guidelines
- Use nasal breathing only—never force or hold the breath.
- If you feel chest pressure, heat in the head, dizziness, or palpitations, stop immediately.
- Those with high blood pressure, heart disease, epilepsy, panic or mental disorders should practice only under qualified supervision.
- When teaching others, emphasize safety above all.
Perform all practices at your own risk. The author assumes no responsibility for any physical or psychological effects that may arise.
Breath is sacred medicine—handled gently, it becomes light; forced, it becomes fire.
Ⅰ | Prologue – Breath as a Microcosm of the Universe
In Meihua Xin-Yi symbolism,
the mouth = Fire, the nose = Wind.
Fire tends to excess; Wind harmonizes it.
Therefore, this method uses nasal breathing only.
The hexagramal sequence—Fire over Water 未済 → Wind over Mountain 漸 → Heaven over Earth 泰—
reveals a movement from imbalance to harmony:
close the Fire (mouth), refine the Wind (nose), and Heaven and Earth unite within you.
Ⅱ | The Four Phases of Breath According to the Hexagrams
| Stage | Hexagram | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Preparation (Aligning the Breath) | 山沢損 – Reduce the excess | Cultivate inner silence |
| Regulation (Stability) | 風雷益 – Increase through balance | Breath naturally flows through the spine |
| Main Practice (Ascend & Descend) | 火水未済 – Unfinished Fire-Water | Witness continuous waves of light |
| Integration (Breathless State) | 乾為天 – Pure Heaven | Union of breath and consciousness |
Diagram 2 – Spinal Energy Flow:
During inhalation, light rises from the perineum to the crown; during exhalation, it gently descends.
Do not “push” it—observe its natural current.

Ⅲ | Practice – Safe Spinal Energy Circulation
- Inhale softly through the nose, guiding awareness upward: tailbone → sacrum → lumbar → occiput → crown.
- Exhale through the nose, letting awareness descend: crown → throat → heart → navel → perineum.
- One ascent + descent = one cycle. Begin with 7 cycles (~5 min); increase to 21 when stable.
- No breath-holding (kumbhaka) required. Keep jaw and shoulders relaxed.
- If head heat or dizziness appears, lower your gaze and settle awareness in the chest.
Ⅳ | Controlling Ascent and Maintaining Balance
Hexagram 地火明夷 – “The Light returns to Earth.”
When the internal fire intensifies, cool it by focusing on the soles, the heart center, and lowering the eyes.
Ⅴ | Three Stages of Inner Evolution (Meihua Xin-Yi Interpretation)
| Level | Hexagram | Transformation |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner | 水風井 – The Well | Channels open; emotions lighten |
| Intermediate | 火風鼎 – The Cauldron | Clarity and compassion arise; old patterns refine |
| Advanced | 風山漸 – Gradual Progress | Breath and awareness merge; time dissolves into peace |
Diagram 3 – The Triad of Practice:
Breath (Nasal) × Attention (Spinal Axis) × Hexagram (Symbolic Law).
When these three align, the flow becomes self-sustaining—light ascends, water descends.

Ⅵ | Practice Log Template (Example)
| Date | Cycles | Duration | Bodily Sensation | Psychological Shift | Dream / Vision |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oct 19 | 7 × 2 sets | 10 min | Warm spine, calm heart | Irritation diminished | Dream of white light |
Epilogue | Final Words of Meihua Xin-Yi
“When Fire ascends to Heaven and Heaven descends to Earth,
man beholds the Divine between two breaths.”
Kriya is not force—it is the reenactment of Natural Yi (易).
When breath and consciousness rise and fall effortlessly,
the spine becomes the Cauldron of Light (鼎 Ding) itself.
