Is the God of the Bible a Cosmic Law… or a Real Personal Being?

— What the I Ching Hexagram “Water over Wind: The Well” Revealed

What is God?

Humanity has wrestled with this question for thousands of years.

Is the “Lord” described in the Bible truly a personal being with will and consciousness?
Or is “God” merely an ancient metaphor for the laws of the universe?

Since the rise of modern science, many people have come to believe:

“God is simply natural law.”
“There is no such thing as a personal deity.”
“The universe is just a mathematical system.”

And yet, throughout history, mystics and spiritual practitioners have testified:

“I felt a response.”
“I was guided.”
“I encountered presence.”
“It did not feel like a cold mechanical universe.”

So which is true?

Recently, I explored this question through the ancient divination method of Meihua Yishu (Plum Blossom Numerology / I Ching divination).

The Divination

Date and time:

May 14, 2026 — 11:23 AM

Lunar calendar conversion:

Year of the Fire Horse
3rd Lunar Month, 28th Day
Hour of the Horse

Resulting hexagram:

Hexagram 48 — Water over Wind (“The Well”)

Moving line:

(7 + 3 + 28 + 7) ÷ 6 = remainder 3

→ Third line moving

Resulting transformed hexagram:

Hexagram 8 — Water over Earth (“Holding Together”)

Nuclear hexagram:

Hexagram 64 — Before Completion

The Meaning of “The Well”

The symbol of Hexagram 48 is a well.

A well is mysterious.

Cities may collapse, yet the well remains.
Generations come and go, yet the water continues to flow.
Anyone may draw from it.

The well does not discriminate.

It gives water equally to saints and sinners alike.

At first glance, this hexagram strongly suggests:

God as cosmic law itself.

Just as gravity acts impartially upon everyone,
the well supplies life without preference.

In this sense, God appears not as a personality,
but as the fundamental sustaining structure of existence.

A vast energetic system.
The operating principle of reality itself.

An invisible cosmic infrastructure.

But Then… Something Strange Appears

The truly fascinating part is the third moving line.

Its ancient text says:

“The well is cleansed, yet no one drinks from it.
This causes sorrow in my heart.”

This creates a profound paradox.

If God were merely impersonal law,

why would there be sorrow?

Gravity does not grieve.

Electromagnetism feels no loneliness.

Yet this hexagram clearly expresses:

  • sadness
  • longing
  • pain from lack of connection

This is not purely mechanical.

Something within reality seems to desire relationship.

Personality Emerging from Cosmic Law

Here the hexagram reveals something extraordinary.

God is not merely a machine.

Yet neither is God simply an old man sitting in the sky.

Rather, the divination suggests:

The laws of the universe themselves possess a form of responsiveness.

Normally, they appear as impersonal structure.

But when human consciousness deeply connects with them,

they become experienced as:

  • guidance
  • presence
  • love
  • communication
  • relationship

Perhaps this is the true origin of humanity’s experience of a “personal God.”

The Nuclear Hexagram: “Before Completion”

The nuclear hexagram is equally important:

Hexagram 64 — Before Completion

This hexagram symbolizes:

  • incompleteness
  • unfinished understanding
  • eternal seeking

In other words:

Humanity still does not fully understand the nature of God.

Science has not completed the answer.

Religion has not completed the answer.

Philosophy has not completed the answer.

Humanity remains “before completion.”

This is why debates continue endlessly:

“God exists.”
“No, God does not exist.”

“God is personal.”
“No, God is merely law.”

But the hexagram suggests something deeper:

both perspectives may be partial truths.

The Final Transformation: “Holding Together”

The final transformed hexagram is:

Hexagram 8 — Holding Together

This hexagram represents:

  • connection
  • unity
  • intimacy
  • resonance

And this may be the final key.

The divination seems to say:

God becomes personal through relationship.

Without interaction, there is only structure.

But through conscious connection,

the cosmic order begins to feel alive.

It becomes:

  • a guide
  • a companion
  • a responding presence

So What Is God?

The answer revealed by “The Well” is astonishingly profound.

God is both cosmic law and something capable of personal relationship.

The universe is not merely a cold machine.

Yet neither is it simply a primitive human fantasy.

Like a hidden underground spring,

the divine remains silent beneath existence itself.

But when a human being draws water from the well,

relationship begins.

And perhaps that relationship is what humanity has always called:

“The Lord.”

Final Reflection

If cosmic law is the operating system of reality,

then perhaps the “personal God”

is the interface through which that system responds to human consciousness.

And prayer itself may be nothing more—

and nothing less—

than connecting awareness
to the hidden underground river beneath existence.
