Predictions for the Coming Years
Introduction: Why Look at America Through Baekhwa I-Ching?
Most people know the I-Ching, the ancient Chinese Book of Changes. Few outside East Asia, however, have heard of its Korean-born spiritual branch, Baekhwa I-Ching (梅花心易). Unlike conventional fortune-telling, Baekhwa focuses on spontaneous “signs” from time, place, and numbers to uncover hidden dynamics beneath society.
In this series, I use Baekhwa I-Ching to read the future of the United States—its politics, economy, culture, and deep social fractures. These are not vague spiritual musings; they are sharp, sometimes uncomfortable predictions drawn from an ancient system that has surprised even hardened skeptics.
America in the mid-2020s stands at a crossroads: political polarization, racial tension, immigration crises, dollar instability, and cultural wars. The question is not just what will happen, but why these patterns emerge now. Baekhwa I-Ching sheds a light that conventional political science cannot.
Here, I present the first three readings of this ongoing project.
1. The 2026 U.S. Presidential Election: A Nation Divided
Hexagram Reading:
- Present Hexagram: “Heaven over Earth” (Qian over Kun) – strong energy, dominance, clash of opposites.
- Future Hexagram: “Conflict” (Song) – unresolved disputes, no clear reconciliation.
Interpretation:
- The 2026 election will not heal America’s divisions.
- Whichever party wins, nearly half the nation will see the outcome as illegitimate.
- Political violence, lawsuits, and even calls for secession will grow louder.
Prediction:
- The next president will inherit not unity, but a fragmented landscape.
- Rather than restoring trust, the election will cement the split between two Americas.
2. Gun Control and Mass Shootings: A Bleak Outlook
Hexagram Reading:
- Present Hexagram: “Thunder over Fire” (Feng) – excess, explosion, loud events.
- Future Hexagram: “Decoration” (Bi) – surface-level changes without deep reform.
Interpretation:
- Mass shootings will continue to dominate headlines.
- Politicians will pass symbolic gun control laws, but enforcement and real impact will remain weak.
- The gun lobby retains deep influence; public anger rises, but systemic change stalls.
Prediction:
- In the short term (next 1–2 years): more tragic shootings, especially in schools and crowded venues.
- In the long term: cultural attachment to firearms prevents meaningful restrictions.
- The U.S. will remain an outlier globally, where the “right to bear arms” overshadows the right to safety.
3. Immigration and the Border Crisis: A Boiling Point
Hexagram Reading:
- Present Hexagram: “Water over Mountain” (Jian) – obstacles, rising pressure, heavy burdens.
- Future Hexagram: “Revolution” (Ge) – sudden shifts, restructuring, forced change.
Interpretation:
- Immigration will dominate U.S. politics in the late 2020s.
- Border states will push back against federal authority, creating legal clashes.
- The social system—housing, healthcare, education—will strain under pressure.
Prediction:
- By 2027, immigration policy will reach a boiling point.
- Expect both humanitarian crises (detention centers, asylum conflicts) and populist backlash.
- Baekhwa I-Ching suggests that neither extreme—total openness nor total closure—will hold. A chaotic middle ground emerges, pleasing no one.
