From Hexagram “Waiting” to “The Well”

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances.”

— 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18

Recently, I found myself contemplating this verse deeply.

Is this merely religious morality?
A psychological comfort mechanism?
Or is it actually a principle capable of altering reality itself?

In other words:

• Rejoicing no matter what happens
• Maintaining gratitude
• Remaining in a state of prayer

Could this way of living itself be the ultimate affirmation and the ultimate success method?

To explore this question, I once again used the traditional Mei Hua Yi Shu divination method based on the lunar calendar.

What “Waiting” Revealed

The primary hexagram, Xu (“Waiting”), is often interpreted as patience.

But that interpretation alone is shallow.

Its deeper meaning is:

“To trust Heaven even before reality visibly changes.”

Externally, there may be danger or uncertainty (Water).

Internally, however, there remains the unwavering strength of Heaven.

In other words:

Even if reality appears unstable, inwardly one is already fulfilled.

That is the true essence of Xu.

This made me realize something profound:

“Rejoice always” does not mean:

“Be happy because good things happened.”

Rather, it means:

“Remain aligned with trust even before results appear.”

Joy Is Not Mere Positive Thinking

When people fall into fear, they begin to:

• panic
• obsess
• cling
• doubt
• operate from scarcity

But gratitude and joy generate the opposite state.

They create the inner feeling that:

“I am already provided for.”

“The path will open.”

“What I need will come.”

This is not escapism.

It is synchronization with a higher order.

The hexagram Water over Heaven strongly suggests that gratitude and joy are not merely emotional tricks — they are methods of alignment.

The Meaning of the Nuclear Hexagram “Opposition”

An important point is the nuclear hexagram:

Fire over Lake — “Kui” (Opposition).

This hexagram symbolizes inner contradiction.

The ego protests:

“How can I rejoice while suffering?”

“How can I be grateful in difficulty?”

“How can I pray while afraid?”

Naturally, the human mind resists.

That resistance itself is part of the process.

And this divination suggests:

Once that inner contradiction is transcended, the flow of reality itself begins to shift.

The Final Destination: “The Well”

The transformed hexagram was:

Water over Wind — “The Well.”

A well never truly runs dry.

People draw from it continuously, yet fresh water keeps emerging.

This symbolism is powerful.

It suggests that when gratitude, joy, and prayer become habitual, life changes fundamentally.

Instead of constantly seeking energy from the outside world,

one begins generating energy from within.

This is the state of “The Well.”

Interestingly, many spiritual traditions ultimately point toward the same realization:

All eventually converge upon one thing:

The maintenance of inner state.

This Does NOT Mean “Do Nothing”

This point is crucial.

The hexagram does not advocate passivity.

“Waiting” also implies:

• preparation
• cultivation
• discipline
• endurance

The message is not:

“Sit still and fantasize.”

Rather:

Continue necessary action in the real world, while internally remaining aligned with trust, gratitude, and joy.

That balance is the essence of this reading.

Final Conclusion

This divination delivered a remarkably clear answer.

“Rejoice always, pray continually, and give thanks in all things” is not merely religious advice.

It appears to function as:

“A method for synchronizing human consciousness with the deeper flow of reality itself.”

And the appearance of “The Well” as the final hexagram is especially significant.

This is not merely a temporary success technique.

It is a transformation of one’s very source of life energy.

Even when reality appears difficult:

Choose joy.

Choose gratitude.

Choose prayer.

Perhaps that is how the inner well begins to overflow.
